Metabolic Health and Metabolic Syndrome
What are the 5 markers of metabolic syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when a person has at least 3 of 5 markers:
-
- Abdominal obesity: A waist circumference ≥ 40 inches for men and ≥ 35 inches for women.
- High triglycerides: ≥ 150 mg/dL (or taking medication for high triglycerides).
- Low HDL (“good”) cholesterol: < 40 mg/dL for men and < 50 mg/dL for women (or taking medication for low HDL).
- High blood pressure: ≥ 130/85 mmHg (or taking high blood pressure medication).
- High fasting blood sugar: ≥ 100 mg/dL (or taking medication to lower blood sugar)
Having even one or two of these markers signals rising metabolic risk worth addressing early.
Can you have metabolic syndrome and still be thin?
Yes. Metabolic health can not be reliably assessed using weight or appearance. It is possible for a person to have normal weight but high visceral fat surrounding their organs, which is a driver for metabolic dysfunction.
What's the fastest way to improve metabolic health?
There is no single “fastest” fix, but the interventions with the strongest evidence are resistance training, improving sleep consistency, reducing ultra-processed food intake, and control blood sugar fluctuations. Combined, these produce improvements in metabolic markers within weeks to a few months when done consisently.
Is metabolic syndrome reversible?
Metabolic syndrome is often reversible, particularly in its earlier stages, through consistent lifestyle changes rather than short-term dieting. Because it’s a cluster of interrelated markers, improving one (like visceral fat or sleep) often improves the others as well.
What is the root cause of metabolic syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome typically develops from a combination of chronic insulin resistance, visceral fat accumulation, inflammation, and lifestyle factors like poor sleep and chronic stress, rather than any single cause.
Does stress actually affect metabolic health?
Yes — chronic stress elevates cortisol, which raises blood sugar, promotes visceral fat storage, and disrupts sleep. All of these independently worsen metabolic markers.
